SOFTPAQ NUMBER: SP2455 PART NUMBER: N/A FILE NAME: CPQWDCTL.386 TITLE: Contura 400 Series Adjustment for Seagate Hard Drives VERSION: N/A LANGUAGE: English CATEGORY: Software Solutions/Laptop PRODUCTS AFFECTED: Contura 400 Series (includes Contura 400, 410, 420, and 430) OPERATING SYSTEM: The 32-bit disk access driver is for Windows 3.1x only. The firmware adjustment is for all operating systems. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: Seagate 350-MB or 420-MB hard drive EFFECTIVE DATE: 25 Nov 1996 ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTION ALLOWED: Yes SUPERSEDES: SP1653, SP1650, SP1610 NOTE: SP2455 does not contain the System ROMPaq diskette contained in SP1653 and SP1650. DESCRIPTION: This utility is designed to detect the presence of a Seagate 350-MB or 420-MB hard drive on a Contura 400 Series notebook. For those hard drives, it reduces the risk of data loss due to potential hard drive errors. Performance degradation as a result of this utility is negligible. The utility executes from a bootable diskette. First, the Softpaq upgrades the Windows 3.1x 32-bit disk access driver, CPQWDCTL.386, on some revisions of the Seagate 420-MB hard drive. It then upgrades the firmware of the hard drive. Finally, on some hard drive models, an optional utility to fix hard errors is executed. HOW TO USE: 1. Obtain 1 formatted 1.44 MB diskette. 2. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. The file that is downloaded is SP2455.EXE. 3. From that drive and directory, execute the SoftPaq file: SP2455 [ENTER] You will be prompted to place the formatted 1.44 MB diskette into a diskette drive to create the diskette. 4. After the diskette is created, you may delete the downloaded file SP2455.EXE if you wish. 5. Insert the created diskette into drive A: and reboot. The utility begins to execute and provides the required information on the screen. After completing the process, if there are no error messages, remove the diskette and power cycle the computer to resume normal operations. The power off sequence is Ctrl/Alt/Power (pressing the purple Power button by itself will result in a stand-by rather than a power off). 6. If you see the error message "Error renaming CPQWDCTL.386" it is because the file CPQWDCTL.BAK already exists or the file CPQWDCTL.386 was not already installed. a) If CPQWDCTL.BAK already exists, rename or delete the file from your hard drive. b) If CPQWDCTL.386 is not installed on your hard drive, run Compaq Windows Supplemental diskette (SP1585). c) Run FAST1610.EXE located on the diskette created by this SoftPaq.
