DOS / Win 3.1

Original OS of the Aero

The Aero originally came with DOS-Version: 6.20 Rev. A and Windows 3.1 Rev G. Later on it has been also sold with Windows for Workgroups. As you have seen from the rest of my website the Aero can be at least also be used with Linux and Windows 95.

A quite amusing description of changing the OS of the aero can be found at Reed Wades website.

Someone recently also said he has managed to install Windows 98 on the Aero. Although Win 98 recommends a math. coprocessor, it could be told to ignore the CPU type-check by commanding "setup /nm". I didn't try this out - but it may be useful for people who need an os that supports f.i. wlan.

Windows 3.1

If you decide to use this OS you should also install the special compaq software for it. This consists at least of:

  • The supplemental software for Windows 3.1
  • The Compaq Diagnostics
  • Compaq Setup
  • PCMCIA Drivers for Win 3.1
  • The mouse-driver for the internal trackball
  • More about these drivers can be found at the drivers-section of my website.

Stephan Großklaß wrote a perfect and up-to-date Tuning-Page for Windows 3.1. Take a look there if you decide to work with this OS.

Below you can see the original seven Windows 3.1 floppies that were shipped with the aero.
You can not download this software, as it is still copyright-protected.

    DOS 6.0

With DOS you should also install the supplemental compaq software for it. At least:

  • The supplemental software for DOS
  • More about additional DOS-drivers can be found at the drivers-section of my website.

If you consider to install dos to the aero, just take a look at the FreeDOS-project - they are working on a free DOS-Version that is published under the GNU-Software-License!
